Kunjudo 薫寿堂

Kunjudo is a Japanese incense manufacturer established in 1893 on Awaji Island. Awaji Island is historically significant in Japan's incense culture, as it's where fragrant wood, likely agarwood, first washed ashore in 595 AD according to the Chronicles of Japan.

For over 130 years, Kunjudo has built a reputation for quality, employing skilled scent masters (Koh-shi) and artisans. Kunjudo is committed to meticulous craftsmanship, using carefully selected natural ingredients and rare wood powders. They also prioritize innovation, having developed the world's first reduced-smoke incense in 1975 and utilizing eco-friendly materials like coconut shell charcoal.

Kunjudo seeks to expand the use of incense beyond its traditional associations with temples and funerals, developing products with minimal smoke and exploring new forms like paper incense (HA KO) and paper strip incense.

Notes & Highlights

Winner of the 2019 Good Design Award.

The elegant black leaf is meticulously made from Washi paper infused with natural essential oils. Designed to gently guide you towards peaceful slumber, this 'Sleep' variation features a sophisticated blend where calming Lavender meets the grounding warmth of Cedarwood and the deep, earthy notes of Patchouli. It's a fragrance carefully composed to soothe the nerves and foster a profound sense of relaxation, making it an ideal companion for your evening wind-down ritual.

Beyond its beautiful appearance, the HA KO leaf offers versatile enjoyment. Before burning, place it on a desk, in an entryway, or near your bedside to subtly perfume the air like delicate potpourri, releasing its fragrance for up to three months.

About HA KO Series:

Journey to Awaji Island, the historic origin of Japanese incense, with Kunjudo's HA KO series – a "new form of reminiscence" born from five years of dedicated craftsmanship. Inspired by the quiet beauty of nature and the tradition of fallen leaves, HA KO (literally "Leaf Incense") transcends ordinary fragrance, meticulously crafted from traditional Japanese washi paper. Its intention is to convey the essential tranquility of Japanese tradition, offering an experience that purifies the air, pleases the eye, and provides profound peace of mind. Presented in thoughtful, minimal-impact packaging, HA KO invites you to embrace a mindful moment – it is truly Scent Reminiscent.

⚠️ Important Safety Note: When burning HA KO paper incense, always place the smoldering leaf on the included non-flammable felt mat positioned safely on a non-flammable plate or surface. Never leave burning incense unattended, and handle the flame with care during lighting. Keep the burning incense away from drafts, flammable materials, and direct sunlight which can cause discoloration. Before discarding, ensure the incense is completely extinguished. Please remember this incense is not edible (do not put in mouth!) and must be kept out of reach of children. HA KO is designed strictly for use as incense or potpourri.
